A very wise man once said to me," Your best thinking got you here. If you think you know what is best for you and your body, then nobody can help you but yourself. So give up your false pride and surrender to the program." |
Any dependency can be described as being like an "enslavement" to a substance or behavior. In the beginning, you enjoy using drugs and alcohol, later it becomes a compulsion and you cannot break free. Over time, your higher consciousness regresses and you become focused on the gratification of your dependency. You ignore your family, friends, and responsibilities just to continue feeding your addiction.
Recovery from this state takes time and help. Detoxification is only the beginning. Hard work and commitment to sobriety is the cornerstone of recovery. Moreover, you have to elevate your consciousness by getting addiction treatment, learning about the disease, and doing 12 step programs like AA and NA. I strongly recommend these meetings to my patients as a place to get unconditional acceptance, support, and caring. As I have said, "been there done that." |
